THIS IS IT. If SB 250 passes, hundreds of thousands of dogs and cats are spared euthanasia in the next decade. If it doesn't pass, those excess animals continue to be born simply to die.

Dear Supporters: SB 250 The Pet Responsibility Act, will have its last Senate vote tomorrow (Tuesday) in the full Senate. If the bill passes the Senate, it has an excellent chance of making it to the Governors' desk and becoming law, saving countless pets from unnecessary death in our shelters.
Seven Senators have made it clear that they wish to hear more from SB 250 supporters before casting their final "YES" vote.The importance of this task cannot be overstated, and the task is simple. CALL THESE NUMBERS.

Michigan House Bill 4263, the Humane Euthanasia of Shelter Animals Act, would ensure that when the state's unwanted, sick or unadoptable shelter animals have to be euthanized, the procedure will only be done by injection of sodium pentobarbital. This method is called euthanasia by injection.

The American Humane Association considers euthanasia by injection to be the only acceptable and humane means of euthanasia for animals in animal shelters.

Even though a majority of the shelters in the state use euthanasia by injection, 10 still use outdated, inhumane gas chambers. Shelter workers overwhelmingly wish to hold and comfort a frightened animal in its final moments of life. That act may be the only kindness the animal has ever known.

In contrast, even with vigilant oversight, euthanizing any animal by means of a carbon monoxide or dioxide gas chamber is both severely inhumane to medium and large animals, and demoralizing to the workers who have to euthanize. Such outdated practices also create public outcry and demean the purpose of an animal shelter.
