Lexy 4yr. Alaskian Malamute

Can you help me find a place for this girl. Her owners turned her in she is 4y and she is spayed and UTD on her shots. She was turned in because they said she killed any other animal that she was around. She has been with other dogs at the shelter and not had anything bad happen at least not yet. I need to find her a home with no other animals. I know Im not asking for much just the moon and stars. Its so hard to get the big ones homed. She is out of time. She is an Alaskan Malamute.

Manhattan Man Arrested for Beating Dog and Girlfriend

Early last week, ASPCA Humane Law Enforcement Special Agent Debbie Koch arrested Manhattan resident Richard Smith, 24, on multiple charges related to domestic abuse. Smith allegedly assaulted his 21-year-old girlfriend and severely beat a two-year-old Shiba Inu belonging to the girlfriend’s sister. Multiple attacks on the dog allegedly occurred in the last few months.

“As we have seen in the past, the brutality associated with domestic violence all too often affects other members of the household, including pets,” says Joe Pentangelo, Assistant Director, ASPCA Humane Law Enforcement.

The dog, named Michigan, was brought to the ASPCA’s Bergh Memorial Animal Hospital (BMAH) on March 25 in a state of distress. ASPCA veterinarians discovered that she had sustained 12 fractured ribs and suffered from trauma. Michigan is currently recovering at BMAH and will be reunited with her owner.

Smith was charged with one count of aggravated animal cruelty and assault. If convicted, he faces up to two years in jail and a $2,000 fine.

If you know of an animal who is being hurt, please report it—those who assault animals often abuse the people in their lives, too. To report animal cruelty in New York City, contact the ASPCA’s anonymous tip line at (877) THE-ASPCA. Visit our Report Cruelty FAQ to learn how to report cruelty elsewhere.

Man Eating Lions

Take Action!

LionWould you be shocked to know that you can pick up your phone, call a 1-800 number and order a lion steak for dinner?

Unfortunately, it is legal in the United States to raise lions for human consumption.
Several restaurants have included lion meat on their menus, much to the dismay of big cat lovers and animal activists alike.

We must work together to ask our elected officials to take steps to stop this horrible practice! We must also let the providers of lion meat know that this practice is simply not acceptable.

Let's urge Congress to direct the United States Department of Agriculture to end the practices that result in exotic cats ending up on menus by ending the breeding and private possession of these animals. Also, let's ask the provider of lion meat to the United States to take if off the menu.

Coyote Price Now Reaches $14,000 in Greenwood Village

Hazing Effort to Scare Coyotes Away is Working

GREENWOOD VILLAGE, Colo.— WildEarth Guardians and The Humane Society of the United States obtained invoices showing that the private shooter hired by Greenwood Village to shoot coyotes on sight in the city’s parks has charged nearly $14,000 in a six-week period. The shooter, Jay Stewart, reports killing one coyote, an adult female, in Westlands Park on February 19. While the groups have called for an end to the killing program because it is indiscriminate and cruel, they are now pointing out that it is wasteful government spending.

In news reports, Stewart has complained that hazing activities are scaring away coyotes, leaving fewer opportunities for him to kill the animals. The city has refused to conduct any hazing, preferring indiscriminate killing of coyotes. Yet, scientific experts say that hazing – scaring coyotes so that they are wary of humans – is one of the most effective ways to reduce conflicts.

“The city’s thirst for coyote blood will not make its pets or residents safer,” said Nicole Rosmarino of WildEarth Guardians. “On the other hand, our hazing effort is working. We’ve scared away every coyote we’ve encountered, which indicates the coyotes in Greenwood Village are not dangerous,” continued Rosmarino.

Greenwood Village officials claim that the one coyote Stewart reported killing was in response to a 14-year old boy that was reportedly attacked by a coyote. But that incident took place on December 31, nearly 2 months earlier. The attack itself has raised questions as police reports clearly state that the boy was left unharmed without even a scratch after the encounter. The boy’s mother did not report the incident until a week later and even then couldn’t wait at the police station long enough to file a report. Greenwood Village police failed to interview the boy until near 2 months after the incident. Greenwood Village’s coyote killing program continues despite no further incidents involving coyotes and people for over 3 months.

The generous Greenwood Village contract enriching one private individual comes during a national recession. The number of unemployed persons rose during March by 694,000, reaching 13.2 million unemployed people nation-wide. The groups regard the city’s wasteful spending as an insult to the millions of Americans being thrown out of work.

Other municipalities in the Denver metropolitan area are leading the way in developing more thoughtful coyote plans. Nearby Centennial has formed a regional stakeholders group to find community solutions to urban coyote conflicts with an emphasis on community education and successful coexistence. Greenwood Village, originally involved in the group, recently dropped out of the regional effort.

“Surrounding jurisdictions have extensive outreach, education and hazing programs and haven’t needed to go so far as to hire a contract killer to stalk wildlife in public parks,” said Holly Tarry, Colorado director for The Humane Society of the United States, “but Greenwood Village city council refuses to base their program in science. Their legacy will be that they wasted thousands of dollars trying to eradicate coyotes which has proven time and time again to make coyote conflicts worse instead of better.

Facts

• Greenwood Village has hired a private contractor to kill coyotes in several public parks and nature preserves. Invoices indicate that Stewart has billed the city $13,650 over six weeks of billing.

• The contract allows Stewart to kill any coyote, including pups, without evidence that the animal has displayed aggressive behavior toward people or pets. Stewart writes on his invoices that he is actively searching for dens.

• The shooter has reportedly killed one coyote in Greenwood Village.

• Greenwood Village was denied permission to use leghold traps by the state, but Stewart has set up box traps to catch coyotes adjacent to one of the city’s parks (Greenwood Gulch).

• Centennial convened a regional stakeholders group on January 7 and municipalities throughout the south Denver suburbs are developing coyote policies as part of that process.

In 2007 horse slaughter was banned in the U.S. Foreign owned slaughter plants in Illinois and Texas were shut down, and currently the fate of H.R. 503, which would prevent shipping of horses for human consumption, lays in wait to be decided by Congress.

Meanwhile, Missouri, Montana, North Dakota, Arizona and Idaho, among other states, are working furiously on plans to stop H.R. 503 from passing in addition to passing legislation that would allow for the opening of slaughter plants, claiming that the overpopulation of horses, and abandonment issues, are a direct result of the slaughterhouses being shut down in the first place, which is not true.

This is not an argument about vegetarianism. Nor is it an argument about wasting "good meat." It's about dealing with an issue in a responsible and compassionate manner.

Horses slaughtered for human consumption aren't going to feed starving people. They're going to end up on plates in Europe and Asia as a delicacy. The only reason this is profitable is because there is a demand for the product.

In a previous post I wrote about horse slaughter, I mentioned that when Cavel International was operating in Illinois, they actually imported horses from Canada to meet demands for horsemeat. It's a simple example of supply meeting demand.

Currently, the economy is adding to the issue of unwanted horses. They're being sent to auctions, abandoned to starve, or shipped across the border for slaughter. None of these options involve any best-case scenario and it's nothing short of appalling to think that these so called loving owners won't cough up the cost of euthanasia.

Equine industries also add to this problem. For every thoroughbred that makes it to the track, thousands of others are discarded as byproducts. For every mare bred in the Premarin industry, thousands of foals are discarded as byproducts. Every backyard breeder who just had to breed their mare, ending up with a foal that they have no idea what to do with, can be congratulated for adding yet another unwanted and undesirable horse to craigslist.org, or worse.

The British Horse Society, in what can only be called a brilliant move, has actually started a "Think Before You Breed Campaign" because of their concern over the lack of "experienced and knowledgeable" homes for these horses.

"Too many mare owners put their horse in foal without objectively considering her merit as a commercial broodmare. To their owners all mares are special, but there are many defects and diseases that are heritable and could be passed on to a foal, limiting its worth. Not all such traits are visible and an alarming number of people go into horse breeding on a whim without sufficient thought to the consequences."

It's certainly comforting to see that at least somewhere there are people who are actually willing to apply some common sense and address the root of the problem, instead of letting it go and trying to make a quick buck off the outcome.

It's not like horses are just sprouting from seeds on the wind. We're creating the problem.

The slaughter industry wants people to believe that this is the only solution to the problem, and a humane one at that, which simply isn't true. Opening slaughter facilities in the U.S. is only going to provide incentive to keep breeding, and lead thousands of horses on a long journey to a gruesome death at the hands of incompetent and uncaring workers.

Julie Caramente, an animal abuse investigator, requested information from the U.S.D.A. under the Freedom of Information Act regarding violations of the "Commercial Transportation of Equines to Slaughter Act." The results can be found here, and they certainly don't leave any room for interpretation.

The states in question are currently trying to pass legislation that would make it legal to open new facilities. Opening horse slaughter facilities in the U.S. is going to do nothing to solve the problem of abuse, neglect and overpopulation of horses.

It's just going to create a funnel for the unwanted ones, perpetuating the problem and allowing a few shady individuals to make a profit on the misery of these animals.

Illinois actually had the audacity to offer a $25 fee for each slaughtered horse to be placed in a fund that would eventually be distributed to rescue groups. The Illinois Equine Humane Center, C.A.N.T.E.R., Field of Dream Horse Rescue and Adoption, Hooved Animal Humane Society, Mid America Horse Rescue and the Society for Hooved Animals Rescue and Emergency all scoffed at this offer of "blood money."

Margo Sutter, President of the Mid America Horse Rescue said, "if Illinois legislators are truly interested in equine welfare, we could think of a million ways they could help Illinois horses, none of which that would involve their suffering and slaughter. The proposed repeal of the horse slaughter ban and the blood-money amendment are as distasteful as they are disingenuous."

While horse slaughter is admittedly an emotional topic, all these organizations involve horse people that know exactly what's involved in the care and rescue of horses. Quite opposite to the horse slaughter industry saying that those in opposition to slaughter have no clue what they're talking about.

Please visit the Animal Law Coalition's website for more information about pending legislation by state and what you can do.
